Our capitalistic society became a mixed economy for a couple reasons: 1) the cultural dominance of the ethics of altruism and 2) the tendency to interpret vague clauses of the constitution through the moral lens of altruism. Since altruism holds all self ‘centered’ action as evil and only interprets the good through an action’s benefit to others ?the natural yet unintended result of capitalism) the regulation of commerce and the common welfare clauses of the constitution have been abused to promote state control of every individual in every aspect of his or her life. Mixed economies are not the natural or determined end of capitalism. Sorry. They are the result of people still clinging to old world collectivist ethics while not being able to wrap their minds around the morality and social viability of self interest.
