Thinking is life

“I’m describing human consciousness in general. It’s volitional, meaning voluntary. You can choose to think or not, but thinking is life. Not thinking is death. This is why I make very clear distinctions in acting and never teach an actor to consider his mind an enemy. One of Sandy’s errors (and most acting teachers) was to tell people not to think when he really meant something else. A student takes the particulars a teacher teaches and generalizes them into principles. Not thinking becomes a life VIRTUE. And THAT is dangerous. Look at how little you value thinking in precisely the areas you need it most. Politics and political systems is not something you f*cking feel your way through. That’s the death of justice, rights, limits on violence, persuasion. Think on that friend and grow your library.”
